Chicken Liver Tip
I am sure that chicken livers are probably one of the most popular baits for catfish but I used to have a major problem with having them stay on the hook in the water and when casting. Try this.
End off your line with a swivel clip. Take your treble hook and liver and slide the liver right down the shaft of the hook and then onto all three of the hooks. This will help keep it on when you cast it out and also from the little buggers that may try to nibble on it. Clip your treble back on. |

Re: Chicken Liver Tip
I will try that one. I also have three other tips:
1. Cut and chunk the liver, then place it in your house on waxpaper and let it sit for about 4 hours. One side will firm up and the other side will still be soft and bloody. It stays on the hook much better. 2. Spawn Sack mesh also keeps the liver on very well. 3. Tie a hook to the end of a snap swivel. Then cast out with just the sinker. Then when your line is tight and the sinker is on bottom, snap the swivel onto the line and put the liver on the hook. The swivel will slide down the line, clear to the sinker.

Re: Chicken Liver Tip
It does work though it can be a little bit tricky and works best when done from a boat.

Re: Chicken Liver Tip
Try tying a circle hook directly to fishing line and fish with liver with no additional weight. The weight of the liver is enough to cast with and the liver slowly sinks to the bottom and is less likely to tear off. The cats feel no resistance of weight to spook them and the liver drifts around a bit acting more natural.

Re: Chicken Liver Tip
I will try that if the water isn't very swift or deep. Usually the holes I fish need at least 3/4 ounce at low water, but I will try the drift technique more this year too.

Re: Chicken Liver Tip
if youre fishing current that need 3/4 ounce weight it doesnt matter what you do to your liver its gonna come off pretty quick, maybe not but thats what i would think your tip of the waxpaper may work for that but if you are fishing that swift of current what do you use usually for bait and how often do you check your hook to see if bait is still there?

Re: Chicken Liver Tip
one more tip you could use is to let the chicken livers sit outside for about 2-4 days
it stays on the hook better It might stink but it works |
